Twin circular oculi face one another connecting the Living Room with the rear Playroom and alluding to the notion of a garden courtyard hallowed out by drawing apart the two internal spaces. A nod to the traditional Japanese “Engawa” or verandah porch, these areas are linked by a narrow timber glass passageway. The Japanese theme prevails throughout from the burnt “Shou-sugi-ban” timber shade screen on the courtyard elevation and lining boards internally to the cedar Japanese bath in the Ensuite.
